                    VISION THERAPY SKILLS

Vision Therapy is an individualized, supervised, treatment program designed to correct visual-motor and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies. Problems of fixation, focussing and eye coordination can be debilitating. If the comprehensive exam reveals visual or binocular dysfunction, a treatment plan may be recommended to optimize visual performance.
Vision is a learned skill, like walking or talking. Most of us are born with good eyesight but one may need to learn to use the eyes together as a team for visual function; vision therapy provides techniques designed to enhance the brain's ability to control eye alignment, eye focusing abilities, eye movements, and/or visual processing.

There is still controversy with the relationship between vision and learning.  Some of the mechanical visual skills like focussing and saccadic eye movements may interfere with reading if these systems are fatigued or broken down.  Sometimes children with difficulty focusing and making accurate eye movements may skip words or lose their place while reading.  It is important to diagnose these problems including optical errors, eye muscle problems, and focusing skills to determine if vision therapy is of benefit.
