PEDIATRICS
Healthy eyes and good vision are critically important components of any child's ability to learn. In fact, 80 percent of learning is visually based - one reason why we recommend that every baby receive a vision examination between 6 -12 months of age. Furthermore, the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that your child receive a full comprehensive eye examination every year. Some signs that might indicate your child is having vision problems include complaints of headaches, tendency to rub his or her eyes, holding reading material very close or avoiding close work. If you sense that your child is having vision problems, follow your intuition and make an appointment to have their eyes checked; don't forget to mention the symptoms you are noticing.
A comprehensive eye examination to rule conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), muscle imbalances, high or unequal refractive errors, and eye diseases. Early detection of eye problems such as lazy eye and strabismus is crucial because children are more responsive to treatments when diagnosed early. Eye health assessments are also important to identify eye diseases or tumours. Unless you feel your child is having eye or vision problems, your child's next eye exam should be at about age 3, and then annually once she enters school. Undetected vision problems can put your child at a significant disadvantage in terms of learning.
