Keratoconus
Keratoconus is progressive eye condition that causes abnormal corneal thinning that can lead to subsequent corneal ectasia irregular astimatism. Typical symptoms include blur, ghost images, halos around lights, double vision and photosensitivity. Researchers estimate that keratoconus affects 1 in 2000 people. To date, there is no treatment to stop the "progression" of keratoconus; the main treatment of choice is rigid gas permeable contact lenses.
Rigid contact lenses improve vision by means of creating the effect of a smoother cornea; with tear fluid filling the gap between the irregular corneal surface and the smooth and regular contact lens. Therefore, spectacles or conventional soft contact lenses typically do not provide the patient with a satisfactory degree of visual acuity. Some patients require use of soft-rigid hybrid lenses (eg. Synergize® lenses) or piggyback systems (rigid contact lens on top of a soft contact lens). In some severe cases usually corneas with significant scarring may require the need for corneal transplant surgery (aka pentrating keratoplasty). Some other treatment methods have, although with limited success, include corneal crosslinking with riboflavin eyedrops and UVA light to increase the mechanical strength of the cornea and intacts corneal implants.
In some advanced case of keratoconus that are not served well by traditional gas permeable designs, the Dyna Intra Limbal (DIL) design achieves the comfort and irregular corneal masking characteristics of scleral designs whilst maintaining many of the fitting characteristics of regular RGPs. The larger overall diameter increases stability, whilst minimal lid interaction enhances comfort and visual acuity. The DIL has been specially designed for Pellucid Marginal Degeneration, Globus Keratoconus, Post Penetrating Keratoplasty, Tilted Grafts and other conditions.
