                    CONTACT LENS SERVICES

At Ironwood Optometry, most of our contact lens services are offered by a contact lens specialty doctor. We provide assessment for candidacy, fitting and dispensing of soft, rigid (including custom fitting of orthokeratology, keratoconus, and post refractive surgery patients), and hybrid lenses.  For some patients, their particular ocular conditions demand a custom and more sophisticated contact lens.
We are dedicated to you to have a healthy and enjoyable contact lens experience.  It is important to analyze you precription, corneal health, tear film, lid anatomy and lens fit in deciding the best contact lens option for you.  Existing contact lens wears looking for an improvement can also be evaluated so to find the best lens system.

Soft Lenses (Hydrogel & Silicone Hydrogel): For most individuals, first-time wear is achieved effortlessly and quickly, and require almost no physical adaptation.  They are the most common modality and have become the standard for contact lens wear in every day wear, as well as in sports and leisure. Available in myriad of materials and brands, soft lenses can correct for almost all eye prescriptions including astigmatism.  Common brands include Acuvue® Oasys, Ciba® Air Optix Aqua, Night+Day, and Bausch &  Lomb® Purevision 1 & 2 lenses.  They are available in both daily and extended wear (overnight) options, as well as disposable 1 day, 2 wk, 1 month, 3 month and non-disposable one year replacement schedules.  They also come with various cosmetic color options.

Rigid Lenses: Fitting RGPs or Rigid Gas Permeable lenses (often mis-referred to as hard lenses) is really an art form.  RGPs will provide best vision and healthy and is the most cost effective way of wearing lenses.  The rigid or "hard" lens materials take first-time wearer a somewhat longer time to adapt to than soft however once they adapt, they can be worn with good comfort and safety by most individuals. Rigid lenses offer the benefits of maximum optical performance, ease of care, and typically better oxygen supply to the cornea than soft lenses.  They are more customized than soft lenses, and can be designed in virtually any size, shape, and prescription.  Rigid Gas Permeables lenses are the treatment of choice for Orthokeratology (corneal refractive therapy/ AOK/ Dreim Lens), keratoconus, and post-surgical corneal irregularity.

Hybrid Lenses: For the most part, these lenses are better in theory than clinically for most individuals.  Usually comfort adaptation is quick.  Some have a rigid lens center attached to a peripheral soft skirt.  These lenses are typically used for people with keratoconus and high astigmatism, although most clinicians agree that these lenses are not the first line treatment option.  There have been some issues with limiting oxygen to the eye and difficulty with insertion and removal with theses lenses.  Some brands include Softperm and Synergize lenses.
